Choose Your Altar

Genesis 13:3-4 He moved on, camping along the way and built his first altar and then Abram prayed there to God

“and then..Prayed there to God” Reading this struck me, wow, when we are praying, talking to God, just what platform are we praying?  Is it from despair, a need vs want, voicing our thanks, whatever is uttering from our lips is funneling from our heart.

Abraham was rich beyond measure. Sure he was chosen, but why? Many are called, yet he had a close walk with God and God indeed blessed Him in ALL things. (Genesis 24:1)  Lot on the other hand was barely saved by the skin of his teeth. He had his roots in Sodom, wealthy merchant, great orator, reason maybe he was chosen to intercede for Abraham, yet almost lost his soul because of attachment.  Searching scriptures see no evidence of him ever making an altar for God. Maybe he figured his gift and being associated with Abraham was enough to get him in the blessings of God? After all he was in the family, yet his cares, his “leaning on” his altar was never erected, from his own heart

Like Lot, we have been graphed into the family of God by being associated with Jesus.  We are joined today, assembled in some fashion and maybe even call ourselves Christians, nevertheless the truth be known only to Him who washed us clean, clothed us with Humility and sent us out, dead to the longings of this world. Yet are we?

HS led me to the scripture where John the baptist, Jesus nephew was admonishing the ones coming for baptism as it was a popular thing to do; (Luke 3:7-)

7-9When crowds of people came out for baptism because it was the popular thing to do, John exploded: “Brood of snakes! What do you think you’re doing slithering down here to the river? Do you think a little water on your snakeskins is going to deflect God’s judgment? It’s your life that must change, not your skin. And don’t think you can pull rank by claiming Abraham as ‘father.’ Being a child of Abraham is neither here nor there—children of Abraham are a dime a dozen. God can make children from stones if he wants. What counts is your life. Is it green and blossoming? Because if it’s deadwood, it goes on the fire.”

Only we can answer this question; where is our altar today? Our cares, concerns and thanksgiving…..love!

If it’s hoping or “riding” on a spouse..or partner, child, work, employment, building, belonging….all the etc’s in our life..well you have set yourself up for a fall.  Nevertheless, today is a NEW DAY, those may have been the facts, today we can build an altar of love and renew steadfast truth. Nothing escapes God’s eyes, because HE LOVES US! In that i rest and give thanks.

All I could think of as I read this was, when we pray, IF, we have any attachments, any desires, any longings in the heart that is not in line to the will of the FATHER… then, it’s like that little bird who wants to take flight to a higher state of grace and be with his Creator, but.. he can’t fly any higher than a few feet from the earth because, on his claw and one wing, is a string that interrupts his flight. The weight of his attachment to this world; has kept him bound in a low state, his take off is not to go very high.
That story was told to me long ago, and it has never left my thoughts; so when I ask for things and people, in prayer, I try and recall if it’s in the best interest (no strings attached) to my Father’s heart, as I want that prayer to be heard in regard to His best interest.
